    Dear Members,

Those of you who attended the GBBA’s latest luncheon had an opportunity to hear Councillor Jim Smith provide a brief update on steps to secure required lands and rights of way in Burnside to accommodate the long awaited “Burnside Sackville Expressway”.

Please review the report and recommendation from HRM CAO Mr. Richard Butts, and  Deputy CAO Mr. Mike Labreque.

We understand the recommended transactions are on the agenda for review and approval, first in camera and then in open Council session, this Tuesday, March 20, 2012.

    Regards,

    Sean O'Boyle, Chair

In the fall of 2009, Metro Transit released a Five-Year Strategic Operations Plan prepared by IBI Group. To restructure the transit services in Burnside the report proposed a new bus terminal for Burnside to be located at the intersection of John Savage Drive and Akerley (Section 4.3.5).

A recent information report from Metro Transit to HRM's Standing Transportation Committee on November 7, 2011 and a follow-up implementation phase 1 report on December 16, 2011, propose that construction of the Burnside terminal be avoided in favour of realigned routing (Big Move #5).

If you are concerned about these proposed changes, please contact members of the Transportation Standing Committee or your local HRM Councillor.

We will update the Greater Burnside community as more details of these proposed changes become available.

The GBBA is pleased to report on having participated in an initial meeting with Councillor Jim Smith and several other senior HRM planning representatives. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss further implementation of the Burnside Functional Plan.

A presentation prepared by HRM for use during our initial consultation session can be accessed
here.  Additional information on the Burnside Functional Plan can be found here.

The GBBA intends to invite HRM planning staff to speak at one of our luncheon sessions this fall in order to enhance and broaden the Functional Plan’s public consultation process. We anticipate additional public meetings will be arranged by HRM at a later date.

The GBBA Board believes it is critical to the area's future success to determine a rational and sustainable land use regime for Wright's Cove, Dartmouth Crossing, old Burnside and new lots being developed within the business park boundaries.

Please give the upcoming public consultation process your attention and attend the public information sessions to be scheduled later this year. Make sure your voices are heard so that planners understand your concerns and that we continue to building a better Burnside.

    Regards,

    Sean O'Boyle
    Chair
